MCA MFA Thesis Exhibition
May 11 2007, 1:47 PM EDT Lacey Swilley was not icluded in Carol Knowles review of the show. What would think and what would you do if you were not written about in a two/three person group show and the others were? What could you do? Sometimes it may be better not to be written about. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: MCA MFA Thesis Exhibition
May 12 2007, 7:57 AM EDT there were far more people not written about in Carol's recent review, at rhodes there were six graduating seniors and if i remember right only one got a mention. i think it would be a bigger deal if there were an 800 word review about one show and you didn't get mentioned. that's always the toughest criticism where the review is all about how good or bad certain work was and then the last sentence says something like "... Bill Smith and Jon Public were also included in the exhibition." ouch. but this review was what, three shows? and only a few were mentioned? it brings to the forefront for these young artists what kind of work do you want to make, do you want to make the big powerhouse piece that leaves an immediate impression (like virginia overton's tractor hanging from the AMUM ceiling in her MFA show) or do you want to make the quiet work? what are the pros and cons of this and how does that work with your personality? when i give my artist's-song-and-dance-talk i show an image of virginia's piece and say to the folks that it's something to think about. if, one day you get stuck in a show with someone who hangs a freaking tractor from the ceiling, how will your piece stand up to that? a lot of it has to do with the work, some of it also depends on the person in charge of hanging the show. which ones were lacey swiley's work, was it the room in the back, the paintings, or the white on white relief prints? the silk cocoon/lily piece was really strong. more and more at rhodes we get students who are interested in viewer interaction with their work, and in the end we say "but i dont' want to interact with the work." this piece totally did it, i really wanted to stick my head in that space to smell the lilies, and there was a reward, it was a good piece. normally i'm not into interacting with art because the payoff is never what it should be and in the end you feel cheated. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. RE: MCA MFA Thesis Exhibition
May 18 2007, 2:48 PM EDT That happened to me for my MFA Thesis show at the U of M, I don't remember who the reviewer was, that is not important. I think indifference is a kick in the head and is evidence that the work is not engaging at any level for the reviewer. You either like the work or you don't. Having said that, I don't always agree with reviewers opinions and consider them as constructive criticism (in most cases) and move on. I can't say it doesn't hurt my feelings, but as artists, we can't always get the rave reviews we desire. I will reitterate from a recent posting on this site about a crude critique of Jada thompson's work...love me...hate me...just remember me! Do you find this valuable? |
